AI receptionist for a UK salon: what £49 buys and what £249 buys
If phone calls are where your bookings come from, a £39–£99/month phone-answering AI is the right buy — Vocalenda is £49. Pay more only if your enquiries arrive in Instagram DMs, WhatsApp or Messenger, which phone-only services never see.
Short answer: if the only thing you need is your phone answered and visits written into one calendar, the honest buy is a phone-answering AI at £39–£99 a month — Vocalenda charges £49 (founding rate, then £69) and does exactly that. Pay three hundred a month only if your enquiries arrive somewhere a phone bot never looks: Instagram DMs, WhatsApp, Messenger. That is the whole decision, and the rest of this article is how to check which of the two you are.
Before anything else: we sell one of these. Lange Software Solutions builds LUCY. Every "honest comparison" in this category is written by a vendor who happens to come first in it, and you should read this one with the same suspicion. The difference I can offer is checkable claims and a section that tells you to buy someone else.
Two different products wear the same name
"AI receptionist" is currently sold for anything between ten pounds and several hundred a month, which should be your first clue that it means two things.
The first is a phone-answering service. It picks up, understands what the caller wants, and either books into your calendar or takes a message. Prices published in the UK in mid-2026: Vocalenda £49/month on a founding rate rising to £69 (checked on their own site on 16 August 2026 — phone only, up to five staff calendars, SMS confirmations). In Vocalenda's own July 2026 comparison of the field, they list IONOS at £39–£99 + VAT, Team-Connect from £9.99, ARROW from £99 including 150 minutes, BookedSolid from £49 per practitioner, The VoIP Shop at £10–£120 plus £0.85 per call, and Moneypenny on enquiry. Those six are second-hand — verify them yourself before you decide anything.
The second is a receptionist that lives where your customers already are. It answers the phone too, but also Instagram DMs, WhatsApp and Messenger, and it knows your price list, how long each treatment takes and your rules about deposits and cancellations. That is a different amount of setup and a different bill. Ours is £249 a month.
Five times the price is not a rounding difference and I am not going to pretend it is. It is only worth it if the extra channels are where your bookings actually come from.
How to tell which one you are, in ten minutes
Open your phone. Scroll back through the last thirty booking enquiries — however they arrived. Count them into three piles: calls, messages (Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook), and walk-ins or your own booking page.
If the calls pile is the tallest, buy the £49 one. Seriously. Everything else you are being sold on top of that is solving a problem you do not have yet, and you can move later — nobody in this market has contracts worth worrying about.
If the messages pile is the tallest, a phone-only service will not touch the part that is actually leaking. The enquiries that arrive at 9pm in your Instagram DMs and get answered at noon the next day are not a phone problem, and no amount of call answering fixes them.
Seven questions worth asking any vendor
These are the ones that separate the products. Ask them of us too — our answers are underneath each.
- Which channels does it actually answer? Not "omnichannel" — name them. LUCY: phone, WhatsApp, Instagram DM, Facebook Messenger, website chat.
- Does it book into the calendar, or take a message? A message is not a booking; someone still has to do the work. LUCY: books, reschedules and cancels, and sends the SMS confirmation.
- Does it know your prices, durations and rules — or improvise? This is where AI receptionists embarrass their owners. Ask what happens when someone asks the price of something you stopped offering last year. LUCY: reads your service list and prices, and re-checks them monthly. If a price is not there, she says she will check rather than invent one.
- What happens when it does not know? LUCY: takes the details and notifies you. Live hand-off to a person works only if you give us a number to transfer to — without one, she takes a message. Ask us to set that up and we will.
- Per minute, or flat? Per-minute pricing is cheaper on a quiet month and unpredictable in December. Get a worst-case number before you sign. LUCY: flat. Your busy month costs the same as your quiet one.
- Whose phone number is it, and can you keep it? Some services hand you a number you lose when you leave. LUCY: your number stays yours, and you can port away.
- Who can read the conversations? Your customers are telling a machine what they want done to their face. That is not neutral data. LUCY: conversations sit in your own tenant, you see all of them in the panel, and we do not train anything on them.
When not to buy ours
Three cases, plainly:
- Phone is your only channel. Buy the £49 tier. You will get 90% of the outcome for a sixth of the money.
- You have no service list and no fixed prices. Every AI receptionist, ours included, is only as good as the business data behind it. Without prices, durations and rules it will take messages politely and nothing more — and you will have paid receptionist money for an answering machine.
- You want it live this week and you have no Meta Business account. Connecting Instagram and WhatsApp properly takes a few days of back-and-forth with Meta. A phone-only service is running the same afternoon.
What we charge, in full
LUCY Receptionist is £249 a month plus a £199 one-off setup, which covers loading your services, prices, hours and rules, connecting the channels, and putting a calendar in place. If you have no website, the calendar lives in our panel and your clients never see it — you and LUCY are the only ones who touch it.
Reception is one of five modules. The others — Radar (what people search for near you and who AI names instead of you), Local (your Google profile), Content (social posts) and Marketing (Meta ads) — are £150, £200, £350 and £400 a month, and they work on their own. All five together are £999 a month instead of £1,349. Ad budget, if you run ads, is paid by you straight to Meta or Google and never passes through us.
Everything is month to month. If you want to see the honest version of your own situation before spending anything, the Radar report at £99 will tell you where your enquiries are coming from and who the AI assistants recommend when someone in your town asks for your treatment. Sometimes the answer is that you do not need a receptionist yet.
Prices for other providers were read on the dates stated above and change without notice — check them at source before deciding. Our own prices are current as of 16 August 2026.
Key facts
- UK phone-answering AI receptionists published £39–£99/month in mid-2026; Vocalenda states £49 rising to £69, phone only.

- The deciding test is where your last thirty enquiries actually arrived: calls, messages, or your own booking page.
- Ask any vendor whether it books into the calendar or only takes a message — a message still leaves the work with you.
- Flat monthly pricing is predictable; per-minute pricing is cheaper in a quiet month and unpredictable in December.
- An AI receptionist is only as good as the service list, durations and rules behind it. Without them, any of them becomes an answering machine.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI receptionist cost in the UK?
Phone-answering services published between £10 and £120 a month in mid-2026; Vocalenda states £49 on a founding rate rising to £69. Multi-channel receptionists that also handle Instagram DMs, WhatsApp and Messenger and book into your calendar cost more — LUCY from Lange Software Solutions is £249 a month plus a £199 setup. Verify any price at source before deciding.
Will an AI receptionist answer my Instagram DMs?
Most will not. The cheaper tier of this market answers the telephone only, and a phone bot never sees a direct message. If you want Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger answered, check that the vendor names those channels explicitly rather than saying 'omnichannel'.
Is an AI receptionist worth it for a small salon?
It depends entirely on where your enquiries arrive. Count your last thirty booking requests: if most were phone calls, a £49 phone-answering service will get you most of the result. If most were messages arriving in the evening, a phone-only service will not touch the problem, and the multi-channel tier is the one worth pricing.
What does an AI receptionist need to know before it can work?
Your services with prices, how long each one takes, your opening hours, and your rules on deposits and cancellations. Without those it can only take messages politely. Any vendor who does not ask you for that data during setup is selling you an answering machine.
